Bio
Janine Lees is a professionally trained artist and has spent the past two years studying contemporary art under the direction of the senior course leader from St Martins, University of the Arts, London. The subject of recent work is based on her home city of York and have been influenced by the Parisian Impressionists of 1876 such as Monet, Pissaro and Sisley. Primarily working in oils, each painting captures the mood and immediacy of a moment. With a spontaneous brushwork approach, Janine carefully balances strong contrasting values to create depth and evoke emotion. Her passion for exploring creativity drives her to develop her techniques, ensuring that energy flows through every piece.
Since 2018, Janine has been dedicated to the art of animal painting, driven by a profound passion to enhance the recognition of animals in the artistic realm. She is among the pioneering contemporary artists focusing exclusively on this genre, utilising the coloured pencil technique to depict animals with the same life and drama found in traditional human portraits. Each artwork conveys a deep emotional resonance, capturing the essence and personality of the subjects. Her portraits honour the unique spirit of each animal and are created with the highest level of technical skill as recognised by some of the world's leading accredited organisations in coloured pencil artistry.
Born in North Yorkshire, Janine studied Marketing at the University of Huddersfield in 1999 before going on to achieve a HND Graphic Design in Burton Upon Trent in 2004. After working in the media industry for 15 years, Janine's passion for creating art led her to become a full-time professional artist in 2018 and has been working from her studio in York ever since.
